Stand-Up!
Stand-Up!
In BJJ, especially from 50/50 or Ashi Garami, developing the ability to stand up is fundamental because it changes the entire dynamic of the exchange.
Remaining seated inside a leg entanglement can make it easier for the opponent to maintain positional control, restrict hip mobility, and find better opportunities to expose the heel, attack the knee line, or progress to stronger control configurations.
Standing up changes the angles, connections, and the opponent’s ability to control your legs. It creates opportunities to disengage from the entanglement, initiate passing sequences, attack from top position, or return to wrestling exchanges.
Simply reaching a standing position is not enough. The skill requires building a stable base, maintaining balance and posture, managing the opponent’s connections, and remaining standing for 3 seconds under resistance. Preventing the opponent from standing develops the complementary skill: maintaining connection, controlling their base, creating off-balancing, and preserving positional control.
Standing up transforms a situation of threat or control into a position with greater mobility, stability, and offensive potential.
Stand Up from 50/50
Either player can win. Both players start in 50/50, seated on the mat, with both hips on the floor.
The goal is to stand up, clear the 50/50, and maintain the standing position for 3 seconds while preventing your partner from standing up as well.
The 50/50 ends when the legs are no longer entangled and the player frees their leg from the opponent’s control.
To win, a player must stand up, clear the 50/50, and prevent their partner from standing for 3 seconds.
If both players stand up before the 3 seconds are completed, it is a draw.
After each win or draw, return to 50/50 and restart.
Rounds of 5 to 10 minutes.
Constraints:
No attacks or submissions are allowed.

Stand Up from Closed Guard Bottom
Start in closed guard.
The bottom player is the only player who can win. His goal is to stand up and maintain a standing position for 3 seconds for Win.
The top player’s goal is to stall and pin the bottom player from inside the closed guard, preventing them from standing up. The top player cannot pass the guard and does not score or win; they only prevent the bottom player from completing the goal.
After each win, return to closed guard and restart.
Rounds of 5 to 10 minutes.
Constraints:
No pass the guard.
No submissions.
Closed guard.
